In 1999 the Garver YMCA/ Spring Cove Pee Wee Tackle Football League was established. The participation was for children ages 10 through 12 entering grades 5th and 6th as of September 1st of each year. The purpose of the league was to teach the student athletes the fundamentals of organized football. The goals were to cover blocking, tackling, and ball handling with a concentration on good sportsmanship, teamwork, and discipline. The league consisted of no more than 4 teams which would play their games against each other.
In early 2004, directors and members of youth football programs from Everett, Tussey Mountain, Claysburg-Kimmel, Chestnut Ridge, Northern Bedford County and Spring Cove School Districts met to discuss the possibilities of organizing a common league made up of teams from each district. After several subsequent meetings the Blair-Bedford Youth Football and Cheerleading league was formed. The intent of the BBYFCL was to spread the interest in football and cheerleading to the youth of the respective districts while teaching teamwork, fundamentals, and good sportsmanship.
Today the BBYFCL's membership has multiple teams from the previous listed districts as well as the additions of Bedford, Berlin, and Williamsburg. Flag teams consist of first and second graders. There are also two tackle divisions. One for players in 3rd and 4th grade with another for those in 5th and 6th grade. Each team is scheduled to have 3 home games and 3 away games. The schools that have multiple teams within one division are not scheduled to play against each other.
At the end of the 2012 season we collaborated with Bedford to have an end of season event for our participants. The Dragon-Bison classic was formed. This allowed players from our two districts to play together as a team representing their grade level. Previous to this the players could go through 6 years of youth football and never be a teammate with a fellow classmate, For the past two years we have held the games starting with the 3rd grade teams and ending with the 6th grade teams playing under the lights like their high-school counterparts. The kids love this.
For the 2014 season we will field (4) flag teams, (3) 3rd/4th grade teams, and (2) 5th/6th grade teams. This year we are keeping the flag games in house and allowing third graders an additional year of flag at their parents discretion. We are hoping to host the end of season Bison-Dragon Classic and keep this new tradition alive.
